Salt Beauty Lab is a boutique salon in North Huntingdon, PA. The owner and lead beautician, Hannah Koshinksy, commissioned this artwork for the salon after seeing my novel illustration project. What started as repurposing that artwork for a vintage fictional movie poster turned into a series of posters, post cards, and adapted artwork for Instagram. These four illustrations provide a lot of content and collateral options for Salt. The post cards will be for sale in her salon along with other boutique items she keeps in stock. They also serve as unique marketing opportunities, and can be reused on hand outs, invitations, and flyers for future advertising. Recently, we updated the colors to match Salt’s new branding.
Each illustration has a special tie to her and the business, in addition to being eye-catching branded designs. Each title is a play on something Salon related and the smaller movie-poster text features fun easter-eggs and additional meaningful ties.
The repurposed beach illustration from one of my grad projects features a “make waves” title, fitting of the ocean scene, but also tying to wavy hair. Making waves also plays on the future of the salon, and thus the smaller text includes Hannah’s husband Paul, and their two young children, Lydia and Liam, as a nod to her future.
The “Roots” poster was created from a photograph taken by Hannah’s sister, Julie-Anna Buckley. She was given a producer title in the smaller text, and their mother, Astrid Buckley, also got a little shout out. Roots serves as a double-meaning feature, tying to the “roots” of hair as well as Hannah’s roots in Sweden, where her mother was born and much of her family still resides.
The confidence poster features the colorful hair and over-the-shoulder snapshot of Hannah’s first hairstylist employee, Loran Coltura, while the final poster in the series features Dawn March, Hannah’s business partner and make up artist at the salon. The title of Dawn’s poster offers a nod to Dawn’s make up services. The Loran and Dawn posters also include fun tag lines that served as filler for the smaller text area and additional easter eggs.
